Many players weighed in to share how our GameHouse Original Stories games have impacted them—from fond memories, to emotional moments, to hilarious happenings. You shared your stories with us; now it’s time for us to share your stories, too!

Emily’s Legacy

Susie K. told us all about how Emily has impacted not only her life, but made a name for herself in Susie’s family, too!

“I’m now 60 years old and have been playing Delicious Emily ever since the first one came out in 2006. It’s been a few years and I’m still playing them! I own all the ones for PC and I love them. I even asked my daughter to name my granddaughter Emily and she did, lol! I missed the look-alike picture for Emily because my granddaughter looks like her and that’s no tall tale!!!!”

GameHouse says: That’s an amazing story, Susie! We wonder, will Emily grow up to be a famous chef, too? Time will tell!

“It’s Not Just Me”

Mandy shared her moving story on Twitter of how games helped build a deep friendship and encouraged her through difficult times:

“GameHouse helped build a relationship between a close friend and me. I now consider her family, something that was helped along by our bonding over these games. Also, the stories have kept me going in dark times. I could look at them and say, ‘It’s not just me’.”

GameHouse says: We’re so happy to hear our games have given you hope in tough times. Many of our team members pour their heart into our games in hopes it’ll help someone or bring joy, so it means a lot to us!

More Than Just a Phase

Kara G. shared how Emily’s character and family have grown on her over the years through thick and thin:

“I have loved Delicious Emily since Taste of Fame, got to love her character and her family from there and have been playing Emily games ever since. It’s such a pleasure being a faithful player of this game, it feels like I’ve been there with her through every phase and have loved most of it.”

My Heart Needs First Aid

Lee M. shared a story of how Heart’s Medicine surprised them with its emotional twists and turns:

“I was really surprised by Heart’s Medicine. I remember my partner playing Time to Heal and was surprised by how emotional it was and how much I loved the characters. I won’t spoil for people who haven’t played but let me say this game made me CRY! I thought stories that moving aren’t supposed to happen in casual games! Now my partner and I tease each other a little time management game made us cry but now we just laugh about it. We love the story and have been hooked on the series ever since!”

In it we expressed GameHouse is a home for everyone—a house you can visit from the comfort of your own home, regardless of distance or circumstances. Above all, we shared how important fun is in keeping positive and healthy. And how looking forward to something helps us overcome trials and work toward a better tomorrow.
 

Our team at GameHouse is made up of creative minds from all over the world. From the Netherlands, to Spain, to the United States, and even Australia—we’ve come together like never before with a singular goal in mind: To continue to support our players and bring you the games you love. Of course this means we’ve had to face some unique challenges. Time zone differences, social distancing, working from home, and finding new ways to collaborate as a team are among them! But together, and with the support of our amazing fans, we’re proud to say we’ve been able to not only continue to bring you new games, but release more GameHouse Premiere exclusives than any previous year.
 

With the holiday season approaching, we understand a lot of you may not be able to see your family or loved ones this year. Traditions may change, or plans put on hold. Things were a little simpler back then—the game was identical the first and featured holiday dishes such as eggnog and fruitcake.

Delicious – Emily’s Holiday Season was the first full-length Delicious Christmas game. It released in 2009 and was also one of the first true Original Stories games, allowing players a glimpse into Emily’s feelings and letting them help her pick between multiple potential love interests.

Delicious Trivia: Emily has worked in over 50 different restaurants.

Emily is quite the hard worker! Since her debut game in 2006, Emily has worked in over 50 different restaurants. From classic Italian cuisine to all-American barbeque and even traditional sushi restaurants, Emily has done it all. She’s even cooked aboard a moving train!

Delicious Trivia: Emily is currently 41 years old.

She may not look it, but as of 2020 Emily O’Malley is 41 years old. But that doesn’t stop her from pursuing her dreams of cooking, innovating, and raising a family. As Emily has proven time and time again, age is just a number!

Do you know what makes the holidays sweet? How about a special treat! Today officially marks Day 4 of our festive 12 Days of Cheer & Play event, and we’re highlighting some of our favorite holiday treats to snack on while playing games. Our list contains sensational snacks such as…

1. Candy Canes

When it comes to holiday treats, candy canes are a popular staple. The first mention of this sweet, distinctively shaped treat can be traced all the way back to 1670! German folklore suggests a choirmaster was looking for a way to keep noisy children quiet during Christmastime church services. The solution? Sugar sticks shaped like a shepherd’s crook!

While no one is quite sure when the distinct peppermint taste that is so well-loved first became popular, these days you can find candy canes in every color and dozens of different flavors!

2. Gingerbread

It’s universally accepted that gingerbread is by far the tastiest home construction material. But did you know the delicious snack has roots that trace all the way back to ancient China? It was here ginger was first grown, and eventually spread out all over the world!

Gingerbread houses, on the other hand, first popped up in 16^th century Germany. It’s hard to know whether the Brothers Grimm inspired the creations with their fantastical story of Hansel and Gretel, or if it was the other way around. These days, gingerbread comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, including gingerbread cookies, houses, windmills, and a favorite of the Dutch GameHouse office: speculaas!

3. Cake

You can never go wrong with a delicious cake! Whether you’re enjoying cakes filled with candied fruit or spices, people all over the world have their own unique takes – from traditional takes to homemade recipes, cake is a Christmas favorite all over the world. Just don’t go eating too much!

4. Charcuterie Board (aka Cheese Board)

Looking for a savory snack a bit on the fancier side? Maybe this is the year to make a charcuterie board! This traditionally French snack is almost as fun to make as it is to eat. Pick out your favorite meats like salami, turkey, or chorizo, then pair them with complementary cheeses, fruits, nuts, or veggies! You can also assemble the board without meat if you’re vegetarian. This snack can be as simple or fancy as you’d like. For that extra festive feeling, try arranging the food in the shape of a Christmas tree!

The holidays are home to many traditions, but some of those traditions have curious roots! Take a look at some of the most curious popular holiday traditions during Day 7 of our 12 Days of Cheer & Play. We answer your most burning questions, such as—

Why DOES Santa wear red?

Most people imagine Santa as a jolly man with a big white beard and a plush red suit—but that wasn’t always the case! Traditionally, Santa Claus has worn green, tan, and even priest’s robes. So why is Santa wearing red so widespread and popular now?

In 1931, Coca-Cola Company illustrator Haddon Sundblom created a Coca-Cola inspired look for Santa in a series of holiday ads. In them, he depicted Santa as a round and joyous man with blushing red cheeks inspired by Santa’s description in Twas The Night Before Christmas. The ads were a huge hit all around the world, and Santa continues to wear red to this day.

Why do people kiss under the mistletoe?

No one is quite sure! Holly “kissing balls” can be traced back to medieval England, where people would kiss beneath them to promote romance or friendship. The Celtic Druids saw mistletoe as a symbol of vivacity because the stubborn plant could bloom even in dark winters. The concept of mistletoe kissing balls can also be found in Norse mythology, where the Goddess Frigg is said to give kisses to anyone who stands beneath it. Regardless of its true origin, mistletoe is a long-standing tradition with deep roots in many cultures.

Why is KFC popular during Christmas in Japan?

Celebrating Christmas is a relatively new tradition in Japan. While it isn’t a federal holiday, Japanese families who do embrace the festivities have a unique way of celebrating—with a bucket of fried chicken!

Since there was no history of a traditional Christmas meal, the fast-food company Kentucky Fried Chicken swooped in with a daring idea: Kentucky for Christmas. A strange new tradition was born. Fried chicken has since become a popular staple of the holidays there, with KFC mascot Colonel Sanders even dressing up as Santa!

Why do people put pickles in their Christmas tree?

Would you hide a pickled cucumber in your Christmas tree? This strange American tradition has several origin stories, but the means stay the same: A decorative ornament shaped like a pickle is hidden inside the Christmas tree before Christmas morning for children to find. Whoever finds it first receives a special present. That’s sure to make your slower siblings green with envy!

For the ninth day of 12 Days of Cheer & Play, we’ve decided to do something special. For the first time ever we’re opening our doors virtually to share some of our own holiday traditions! Our team celebrates the holidays in all sorts of ways, including gifts, grapes, and… sunglasses?? That’s right—what you learn may surprise you!  

Treasures Old and New

Fun is important to everyone at GameHouse, including Mark, who celebrates Christmas with a special scavenger hunt.

“Each Christmas, we host a special treasure hunt in our home. The kids get a clue which they have to solve to find the next clue. And after they’ve solved 7 or 8 clues, they’ll find their present!”

But the festivities don’t stop there. Mark, who’s half-Italian, also celebrates with a beloved family dish.

“We also enjoy bagna cauda, which is a Northern Italian dish with olive oil, butter, lots of garlic, and anchovies. You eat it by standing around the simmering pan and dipping raw veggies like napa cabbage, broccoli, or peppers, etc. into it. It’s too hot to eat by itself, so you hold it over a plate of bread. Once the plate is soggy with oil, we eat! It’s served with red wine to cut the grease and on the side, salami, prosciutto, olives, cheese, and marinated mushrooms with chickpeas. You’ll smell awful for about 3 days, but it makes delicious leftovers and it’s a lot of fun—both socially and to eat!”

Star Lanterns and Rose Cookies

The holidays are full of diverse decorations, but as Poornima shares, Christmas in India takes diversity to a whole new level.

“Christmas is a special time for me. Hindu, Catholic, Orthodox Christian—regardless of religion, we celebrate together with relatives and friends. People in India also celebrate alongside their neighbors, friends, and colleagues. Most houses have a star lantern which hangs outside their house or balcony to indicate they’re celebrating Christmas. Nativity scenes are also very common in homes.

Christmas trees are getting popular now, but in the south of India we also decorate outdoor trees like banana trees, mango trees, and more! Special food is also made depending on which region you’re from. My memories of Christmas food include fruit cake, homemade wine, and rose cookies—which are deep-fried and shaped like flowers. Wherever you are in India, Christmas is celebrated in its own special way!”

A Christmas Carol

When asked about his favorite holiday memories, George shared what it was like to go caroling in the small Romanian village where he grew up.

“My favorite part was the caroling. It was very cold—about 5°F early on the morning of Christmas Eve. All the kids would gather at 3am and split into two groups to go caroling. We’d go from house to house, wishing people good health and good fortune. Or as the old Romanian adage goes, ‘fatty pigs, milky cows, wooly sheep, strong bulls, and playful horses’.

My best Christmas memories are from those nights. We’d go caroling throughout the night, all singing in the cold but not feeling cold at all (probably because of all the sugar and running around). There are a lot of local traditions deeply rooted in folklore, so unlike other times of year we could stay late outside.”

Keeping Cool for Christmas

The holidays Down Under are a far cry from the snowy Carpathian Mountains. Melissa shared her account of what celebrating Christmas in Australia is like.

“Being from Australia, it is typically quite hot over the holiday season. As an Aussie it’s all barbecues, beaches, and ice cream—and finding ways to stay cool!”

While sunglasses are cool and ice cream for Christmas sounds delicious, Melissa went on to say she celebrates the heritage of other family members with her holiday meals.

“On Christmas Eve, we have a delicious Lebanese feast to celebrate my Dad’s Lebanese culture! As for my husband’s family, his mom is Korean, so Mando is a must over Christmas!”

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Bodie, who’s from the USA, enjoys a mixture of classic and contemporary to make the holidays special.

“The holidays are all about that warm feeling for me, so one of my favorite holiday traditions involves going out and choosing a live Christmas tree to put up in our home. Each year we get a new ornament, so the tree is full of fond memories we revisit each year. We won’t be getting a tree this year due to the pandemic, however we’ve found some creative new ways to celebrate, like decorating one of our windows with lights and ornaments instead. This year we’re also kicking off a new tradition—cuddling up with candles and blankets and reading a book aloud on Christmas Eve.”

Movies and music are also a big part of the holidays for him.

“Every year my fiancée and I sit on the floor and wrap gifts while The Nightmare Before Christmas plays on the TV. Of course no wrapping job is complete without singing along—and the voices are a must!”

Twelve Grapes and Three Wise Men

Ismael had a lot to share about Christmas in Spain, where it’s not Santa who traditionally brings the presents, but rather the Three Wise Men.

“Traditionally children have to wait until January 6^th to open their presents. When I was a kid, we didn’t usually get presents from Santa Claus on Christmas Day, though it’s more common these days—and he’s known as Papá Noel. Instead, children would send a wishlist to the Three Wise Men. On the morning of the 6^th, every child would wake up early to see what they got! It wasn’t just about being a good kid all year, though—children also prepare little shows near the balcony or window to get some extra candies. Instead of milk and cookies for Santa and his reindeer, they’d leave water or hay for the Three Wise Men’s camels. Much like Christmas Eve, children would have to go to bed early so the Three Wise Men could do their work without being noticed!”

Since the giving of gifts traditionally follows the new year, New Year’s celebrations are also part of the festivities.

“Something very traditional in Spain is to eat 12 grapes during the 12 chimes at midnight. On TV, celebrities will connect live from Puerta del Sol square in Madrid to eat grapes and follow the chimes from the clock there. The grapes are supposed to bring good luck for the new year.”
